UH Re-Designated as National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Research

National Security Agency Reaffirms UH’s Leadership in Cybersecurity Innovation and Research Excellence Through 2029

The University of Houston has been officially re-designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity – Cyber Research (CAE-R) by the National Security Agency (NSA), recognizing the university’s continued leadership in cybersecurity research and education.

Designation Ceremony

UH has maintained this distinction since 2014, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to advancing cybersecurity innovation, workforce development, and national defense. The new designation remains in effect through the 2029 academic year.

The CAE-R program is part of the broader National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) initiative, which designates institutions that have demonstrated excellence in cyber defense education, research, or operations. The NCAE-C program aims to cultivate a pipeline of highly skilled experts capable of addressing the nation’s most pressing cybersecurity challenges.

UH currently holds two NCAE-C designations:

  • Cyber Research (CAE-R): Recognizing excellence in advancing cybersecurity research and innovation.
  • Cyber Defense (CAE-CD): Valid through 2028, highlighting UH’s role in preparing the cybersecurity workforce through education and training.

The CAE-R re-designation was achieved through a collaborative effort by cybersecurity faculty in the Department of Computer Science within UH’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, with Dr. Stephen Huang serving as the lead in this effort.
